Hermann Glaser is best known for his three volume cultural history of
the German Federal Republic, but he's also good on everything from anthroposofical
healing techniques to ... gardening. In his 1999 Hinterm
Zaun das Paradies: Wandlungen des Gartenbildes (Behind Paradise's
Fence: Metamorphoses in the Image of the Garden) he describes, not
real existing patios, but the garden as plant poetry in time. (Yes, it
does sound terrible in English.) The path is sometimes a bit well
worn, but most will tiptoe with pleasure out of Eden, past the first cultivators,
through mediaeval cloister gardens, aristocratic parks, and middle class
arbours. Petit bourgeois garden gnomism gets a good kicking at the end.
There are some good quotes and illustrations - including personal faves
by Vogeler and Mondrian - and the bibliography is excellent.

Most coppers recommend it and it's sold on Amazon, so who are we to disagree?
If you can't face hanging around any more in Dr Blair's surgery, hoping
he'll legalise licensed distribution, then a handy DIY alternative is
to be found in Ed Rosenthal's The
Big Book of Buds: Marijuana Varieties from the World's Great Seed Breeders
and his Closet
Cultivator. We prefer these to Mel Frank's Marijuana
Grower's Guide, which all seems a bit dated. Nothing wrong with old
hippies, tho.
